Remembrance Bags

People have been getting in touch to ask if its possible to make a bag from their own saddle so I thought it would be good to write a post which will hopefully answer some of the questions on this process.

Firstly, the answer is Yes.

Some people provide me with a saddle to make into a bag, simply because they have one available - and that is absolutely fine.. if you have a saddle and you would like a bag - please get in touch by email and send me some photos.

Others get touch, requesting a bag to be made from a saddle that means the world to them. This is often because they have lost the horse to which it belonged and they cannot bear to part with the saddle which holds so many memories. A handmade bag cut from the leather of the saddle is a wonderful way to carry a little part of that memory and keep it close.

For Carla Gebhard, In Memory of Nikita

If you are considering a bag for this reason please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Its an honour to be trusted with task of transforming and preserving these very precious items, which hold a value far beyond the materials. I am always happy to chat through the options - including different styles of bag and also which pieces of tack you would like to incorporate.

For Linda Gunn, In Memory of Johnson

Linda’s bag was a surprise gift, organised for her birthday by her family. They filmed her opening the present and it is a very touching moment which they kindly shared with me. You can watch it by clicking the link.

It is also possible to make smaller items from the leather of your saddle - it doesn’t just have to be a bag, especially if budget is a concern. Keyrings, cardholder wallets and other accessories are also available.

Some people choose to have their order personalised with the name of the horse stamped discreetly into the leather of the bag or the strap; others want to incorporate a special browband, or ask me to save the saddle’s makers mark - its a very personal process and each bag is completely unique to the memory.
